The Story of C.S. Lewis
C.S.(Clive Staples) Lewis was born in Belfast Ireland on Nov. 29, 1898. Two early
events shaped his life. First, his brother went away to boarding school. Then
his mother died when he was 10 years old. These two events had a profound effect on
his life and by 1912 he considered himself an atheist. He had a classical education
at Oxford where his atheism was strengthened. He took a teaching job at Magdellan
College where he met J.R. Tolken, another Christian. In 1929 he abandoned
atheism and 2 years later trusted Christ. He began to write with decidedly Christian
themes. His books such as "Mere Christianity", and "The Screwtape
letters" are just two of his many famous books. With his fame and fortune
increasing Lewis was the model of humility. He gave much of his wealth away to
Christian causes and helped finance the education of many young women and men. Lewis
married Joy Davidmon Grisham in 1952, who had come to Christ through his writings.
Shortly after, she developed cancer and died in 1960. His book "A grief
observed" recounts his spirtual struggle accepting her death. When he died in
1963 it went relatively unnoticed because he died on the exact day that John F. Kennedy
was assasinated.
It is so easy for me to sit here and write some encouraging note
to those who are suffering, without really knowing the pain that many of my Christian
brothers and sisters are in. I could print a BIble verse and that might be helpful.
The truth is that pain is very hard to deal with. Loss can be devastating.
But let us not question the goodness of God because we are experiencing pain.
May we not blame Him for the situation that we are in. God has never
promised a convenient life without pain but He does promise the grace to endure it.
Let's abandon ourselves to Him and Him alone and we will find His grace and mercy.
Sincerely,
John Wardy
